About the Speaker

Dr. Nicholas Miller is Professor of Church History at the Seventh-day Adventist Seminary at Andrews University, and also serves the Columbia Union Conference as legal counsel and Director of Public Affairs and Religious Liberty. Dr. Miller has degrees in theology, law, and church history, and has worked as a lawyer in the field of church and state for many years. He appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court, and helped draft Congressional legislation protecting religious freedom. He has written many scholarly articles and several books on the topic of church history and religious liberty, including The Religious Roots of the First Amendment (Oxford, 2012) and most recently 500 Years of Protest and Liberty: From Martin Luther to Modern Civil Rights (Pacific Press, 2017). He vlogs regularly on the YouTube channel “Protest and Liberty Today” about current issues of religion, freedom, and public affairs. Dr. Miller has three children with his wife Leanne, who is a musician and practicing pediatrician.
